Our approach

A practical approach to helping humans solve operational osbatcles.

Our mission

Practical Intelligence was created to close the gap between the promise of AI and the reality of operational businesses.

Too many organisations are told that “AI will transform their business”, yet struggle to apply it in ways that create tangible value.

Our mission is to change that by making automation and AI practical, accessible, and commercially meaningful.

We believe the most powerful use of AI is not replacing people, but removing the repetitive work that slows them down.

Our principles

Practicality

Solutions must work in real operational environments.

Impact

Every engagement must produce measurable improvement.

Partnership

We work alongside operational leaders to deliver change that lasts.

Our values

Practicality First

Real-world solutions that work.

Our focus is on building reliable, low-friction tools that solve actual problems today, rather than over-engineering for hypothetical problems tomorrow.

Outcome Led

Results over activity.

We measure success by impact, not effort and prioritise meaningful progress over performative “busyness,” ensuring every action directly contributes to a defined goal.

Secure & Responsible

Protecting data and trust.

Security is our foundation, not an afterthought. We maintain the highest ethical standards, ensuring that every innovation respects user privacy and earns long-term trust.

Ownership

Accountable for results.

We take initiative and see things through. Ownership means staying responsible for the final delivery, learning from setbacks, and never saying “that’s not my job.”

Elevate People

Automation that empowers.

Technology should amplify human potential. We use automation to remove the mundane, freeing people to focus on the high-level creative and strategic work they do best.

Continuous Improvement

Always getting better.

We reject the status quo. By using feedback and data to iterate constantly, we turn small, incremental changes into a consistent standard of excellence.

Our Story

Practical Intelligence was founded on a simple belief: most operational businesses don’t need more technology, they need their existing technology to work better.

After more than two decades working in operational technology environments across critical infrastructure, utilities, and service organisations, our founder saw the same pattern repeated again and again.

Businesses were investing heavily in systems, platforms, and digital transformation programmes, yet many of the everyday operational problems remained unchanged.

Teams were still spending hours manually coordinating work.

Data was still being copied between systems. Operational leaders still lacked clear visibility of what was really happening on the ground.

At the same time, automation and AI were becoming increasingly powerful, but for many organisations they remained difficult to apply in a way that delivered real, practical value.

Practical Intelligence was created to close that gap.

Rather than promoting large-scale transformation or theoretical AI initiatives, our approach focuses on solving real operational problems quickly and pragmatically.

By combining proven off-the-shelf technologies with lightweight integration and automation, we help organisations remove unnecessary manual work, improve operational visibility, and increase productivity without replacing the systems they already rely on technology should simplify operations, not complicate them.

Today, we work with operationally intensive organisations across sectors such as utilities, field services, logistics, and infrastructure — helping them reduce costs, move faster, and operate with greater control and confidence.

We make automation and AI practical, accessible, and commercially meaningful for the organisations that keep the real world running.

Meet our team

We focus on where the real operational friction exists:

Ric Welsby

Managing Director & Founder

Ric is an operational technology leader with more than 27 years’ experience delivering technology, automation, and digital transformation across critical infrastructure and service environments.

He founded Practical Intelligence to help operationally intensive organisations turn the promise of automation and AI into practical solutions that reduce cost, improve productivity, and make day-to-day operations run more smoothly.

Outside work Ric enjoys spending time outdoors, especially any excuse to be on, near, or in the water. He values time with his young family and can often be found taking them to watch the rugby or introducing them to what he firmly believes is proper music.

Harry

Lead Automation & AI Engineer

Harry leads the design and delivery of Practical Intelligence’s automation and AI solutions, helping clients turn operational challenges into scalable, production-ready systems.

With experience across enterprise operations, workflow automation and applied AI, Harry specialises in building practical solutions that deliver measurable business outcomes. His work focuses on improving operational efficiency, reducing manual effort and creating repeatable systems that support long term business performance.

Harry brings a strong ability to bridge technical delivery with commercial value, designing solutions that not only work technically, but solve the real operational problems that matter to leadership teams.

Sustainability & Responsibility

We believe that operational efficiency and sustainability often go hand in hand.

Many of the challenges our clients face — manual processes, duplicated effort, fragmented systems and inefficient workflows — create not only unnecessary cost, but also wasted time, energy, and resources.

By automating routine work, integrating systems, and improving operational visibility, we help organisations operate more efficiently and make better use of the people and assets they already have.

As a business we also take a practical approach to reducing our own environmental impact.

We operate as a digital-first organisation, minimising travel and paper usage wherever possible, and we prioritise technology platforms and suppliers that share a commitment to responsible and sustainable operations.

We are helping organisations run better — in ways that are both commercially and environmentally sustainable.

Looking Ahead

We are currently working with early adopter organisations to identify and deploy practical automation and AI solutions that improve operational efficiency and reduce cost.

Our focus over the coming year is expanding our work with operationally intensive businesses across utilities, infrastructure services, logistics and field operations, while continuing to develop repeatable automation solutions that can be deployed rapidly across multiple organisations.

We are always keen to speak with forward thinking operational leaders who want to explore how automation and AI can deliver real-world results.
